Interview Jimena : Student and Au Pair in Paris

Sixtine · 19/05/2021

Jimena is Mexican, she is now a student and Au Pair in Paris at the same time! Read her testimony 😉

How long have you been in France for?

Since last January, so from 1 year and 3 months.

Why did you want to be an Au Pair? What were your motivations?

I finished school in December 2019 just before I came here and well they offered me a job blablabla… when I was interning, but I didn’t accept because I didn’t want to go into an office just yet. I want to live there for a while like meet people, meet another culture, have another experience before I go for the rest of my life to an office.

Why did you decide to stay in France to study?

It’s always been a project that I had in mind, like I always wanted to do a master abroad. So I had so much time free with the family because of my schedules and I say «Well maybe this is the time». You know, like why not, like I’m getting paid, and I love Paris. So I don’t know it was kind of win-win situation in a project that I already wanted to do, and I said «Well this is the time, this is the time to do it». Because actually when I came the idea was not to study and to be a fille au pair. It was just to be a fille au pair and then I started studying.

What are you doing as a student?

Right now, I’m studying a master in digital marketing.

What did you find easy and difficult during this experience?

For me, I had no problem between being an au pair and studying. Because I can manage. I just go to school like 3 times a week: Monday to Thursday, just in the afternoon from 4 to 8. So that’s not much the Friday sometimes I work, sometimes I don’t. In other families I know friends, they work too much, so they work a lot. With my schedules, I can perfectly combine studies and the fille au pair life. But what I found to be tough it’s the situation like the pandemic.

Where do you see yourself in 1 year?

Yeah, that’s a tough question because actually I’m going to decide right now what is it what I want to do -yes me too- I’m going to finish my master this may and I supposed to have like a «stage» like «obligatoire». You know, for 6 months like an end of study stage for 6 months. But I can do it anywhere in the world, and I’m still trying ton decide if I want to stay longer in France or maybe just go back to Mexico. I don’t know, like it honestly depends so much on the situation.

What do you like about France?

I like that’s a different culture than mine. I like the food.

And finally, do you have any advice for young people who would like to do what you did?

Any advice… Maybe don’t come during a pandemic that would be my advice. I think, the most important part is really picking your family and making you sure you’re going to have a good relationship. I was lucky you know, I have a really good relationship with my host parents. But then I compare with my friends they have like a bad relationship, and it’s not that cool you know. Take the time to pick who are you going to live with and don’t go for the apartment in front of the Eiffel Tower you know, no. Go for the family that you think that you’re going to be most comfortable with.

Thank you very much Jimena for this interview and enjoy your stay in Paris! 😊
